Production Of New Honda Fuel Cell EVs To Start In 2024 (PDF)
Honda announced that starting in 2024, it will produce an all-new hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV). Based on the recently launched Honda CR-V, the new zero-emissions vehicle will contribute to Honda’s goal to make battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and FCEVs represent 100% of its global auto sales by 2040.
Thanks to its CR-V-based FCEV and plug-in technology, the new CR-V will be North America’s first production vehicle that lets drivers charge their onboard battery for an electric drive in the city, then refuel for longer trips with hydrogen.
Gary Robinson, vice president of Auto Planning & Strategy for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. says: “As we accelerate our plan to produce Honda battery EVs in the United States, we also will begin low volume production of fuel cell electric vehicles there to further explore their great potential as part of a sustainable transportation future.”
Honda believes that FCEVs powered by renewable energy have a major role to play in creating sustainable transportation. Furthermore, where hydrogen refueling infrastructure is available, FCEVs can refuel in minutes, providing drivers with the same level of convenience as conventional cars.
Fuel cell electric vehicles are environmentally-friendly cars that carry a high-pressure hydrogen tank instead of a traditional gasoline tank. There are no emissions from the vehicle because electricity is generated inside the fuel cell, powering the electric motor and driving the car without releasing carbon dioxide or other harmful byproducts.
The cars will be assembled at the Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio, a small-volume, specialty manufacturing facility, focused on craftsmanship and hand-assembled vehicles.
