General Motors is fighting back against its rival Toyota, with 80,000 more cars sold than Toyota in 2022. They’re on their way to reclaiming the top spot as the best-selling automaker in the U.S.

GM sold 555,580 cars in the United States during the three months to September, a 24% increase from the same period last year. Toyota sold 526,01, per its own figures, a fall of 7.1% year-on-year.

GM’s latest sales figures put it at the top of annual American car sales and help it maintain its lead with over 1,650,000 cars sold in 2022 so far.

For the first time in 90 years, Toyota dethroned GM last year after a series of supply chain shortages, particularly involving semiconductors. It was the first time since 1931 that GM was not the largest seller of cars in the US, but GM said that they have been able to improve the supply of semiconductors, which has helped them boost production.

GM saw an increase in Q3 sales when most others saw them declining. Especially noteworthy is the fact that most consumers are expecting a slowdown.

  • Stellantis NV, which owns brands like Ram, Dodge, and Chrysler, revealed that for the third quarter of 2022 it had sold about 386,000 cars—a 6% fall from last year.
  • Honda saw a 36% drop in Q3 sales for 2022 and said that the decline may be due to delayed trade-ins caused by environmental concerns.
  • Hyundai saw a 3% increase in its sales for the third quarter. It’s been their best-ever performance for the Q3 so far, according to the company.
  • Over the last three months, Ford has sold 143,000 vehicles. This is an 8.9% decline from the same time period in 2021.
